Each new year brings with it plenty of design trends to get excited about—and if you’re longing to incorporate a new look into your space without giving it a complete overhaul, you’ll want to keep reading.
Here, interior designers share how to expertly embrace 2024’s trending aesthetics without parting ways with all of your existing furniture or making irreversible updates.
Work Within a Small Space
If you’re eager to embrace a 2024 design trend that doesn’t necessarily complement your existing space, consider introducing it within a smaller room of your home instead. Sarah Tract, the founder of Sarah Tract Interiors, suggests turning to the powder room.
“Take this small space as an opportunity to express your trendy self with wallpaper and funky accents,” she advises. “The best part is that it will often be closed off from the rest of the home, and therefore won’t intrude on any other spaces.”
Another small space to consider is the area above a dresser or on top of your kitchen counters, Brooke Spreckman, the founder of Design Hutch, says. “That way you’re only re-doing a small area that is more in your line of sight,” she says.
Use Accessories to Your Advantage
Integrating thoughtful accessories into your home to reflect a trend you love can work wonders. The best part? You won’t need to part ways with all of the large pieces that you own to make an impact.
“By tying in the aesthetic throughout the entirety of the home, you can create a cohesive space without a major overhaul,” Tract says.
Kristin Marino, the founder of KozyKasa, recommends drawing upon tabletop decor, seasonal pillows and throw blankets, or artwork.
“Incorporating something new can easily be done without replacing all your furniture or tearing down walls,” Marino says. But if you do want to go a bit bigger, you can always paint or wallpaper an accent wall in alignment with a specific trend, she adds.
Make Other Impactful Yet Reversible Swaps
In addition to being strategic with accessories, you can work to bring a new trend into your home in a variety of other ways, one of which is through paint.
Amanda George, the founder of Amanda George Interior Design, suggests adding a quick coat of paint in a trending color that reads as neutral. Some of her top picks include sage, navy, and terracotta.
Another strategy is incorporating peel-and-stick tile that plays to a specific trend but is removable should your aesthetic change.
“There are some clever peel-and-stick tiles that look expensive but easy to install that can be used as a backsplash or to add texture to a surface,” George notes. Whether it’s cabinet hardware or door knobs in a trending finish, George suggests swapping out basic hardware for a simple refresh.
File Away a Trend You Love for Later
If you don’t currently have the space or budget to embrace a new trend in your home, even on a small scale, Marino says you don’t need to feel bad if this is the case. “There’s no rule that you have to follow every trend just because you like it,” she says.
Additionally, not every design trend is necessarily right for every type of home. “It’s important to stay true to the architectural elements of an existing space,” George says.
You can always file a specific trend away for later and promise yourself that you will incorporate it into a future home down the line.
When Embracing a New Trend, Store What You Have
Trends come in cycles, and it’s smart to keep items that you don’t currently feel drawn to but still appreciate on hand rather than parting with them for good, Spreckman says.
“I also recommend paring back what you have over time and storing it for a bit,” Spreckman says.
She says that it’s okay to make your everyday items feel seasonal and that you can store pieces away until you want to rearrange your home again a few months later. For example, Spreckman often feels inclined to switch up pieces such as artwork and vases in her own home.
